Intertextuality

Intertextuality refers to when one media text incorporates another media text and in the process alters said media text. Intertextuality has many sub types such as: Pastiche: Pastiche is when a media text imitates another media text or style in a positive way. Marina and the Diamonds' music video for 'Shampain' is a pastiche of Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' music video as a bunch of undead girls join her for a choreographed dance sequence. The music video for 'Gives You Hell' is a pastiche of a typical 50's neighbourhood, with the 'family oriented' side of the warring neighbours dressing in typical 50's fashion too. Music Video Theories

With the rise of music videos came a (natural) rise of theories revolving them, analyzing what elements made a music video and what aspects could be seen being repeated, creating an almost method to making music videos. We made a checklist of theories we needed to check three music videos for. These theories are predominantly by Andrew Goodwin, Sven Carlsson, John Stewart, Michael Shore, Lara Mulvey and Steve Archer. While it would have been convenient using Canva again, I wanted to broaden my expertise in a variety of online tools which is why I chose to make my presentations on Emaze. Codes and Conventions of Music Videos

The codes and conventions of a music video are elements that are regularly used to build meaning of music videos by using certain techniques and symbols especially within a genre. These codes and conventions can fade over time and new ones can emerge. Here are some that I have noticed: Styles: Interpretative  These music videos often have a loosely structured narrative making them polysemic. Music videos like these are likely to have an open ended ending and lots of symbolic codes which could have multiple meanings within the same context of the music video In the 'Delicate' music video, Taylor Swift can no longer be seen by the people around her. She seems at times saddened by the fact and at times liberated. This element of the music video can hold many meanings such as her not being seen literally, her not being seen for who she is and just a star persona, her not being able to show herself even if she tries or wanted to because of her reputation and als

Types and Styles of Music Videos

There are four main types and styles of a music video: Narrative Based: A narrative based music video will have a silent film set to the audio of the song which tells a story to the viewers and is often loosely or literally based on the lyrics of the song, forcing the audience to pay attention to the auditory elements of the music video too. The narrative based music video is used to send a message to the audience. Artists may or may not be featured in the music video. However, they never lip-sync to the song. The narrative could be linear, non linear or broken with devices such as flashbacks and visions used to tell the story they're trying to tell. Good examples of narrative based music videos would be: Sacrilege- Yeah Yeah Yeahs The music video shows a non liner narrative of hypocritical Christians who burn, hunt down and kill a girl and her lover (the pastor) for having an affair, reigning judgement down on her while ignoring their own sins. Historical Background of Music Videos

Music videos weren't always this representative or this HD for that matter. Since my project this year is on music videos I thought it would be better do my research into it's history before anything else.
