Last Preperation

Finally done with our planning, we've gathered our stuff, ready to embark on the adventure that will be this shoot. We're equal parts excited and terrified.

Shooting Schedule

Now that everything is planned, we just need to decide on when to shoot our music video and come up with a schedule so we're able to stay organised and best utilise all our resources. After discussing with the team members we picked dates which suited all of us. I designed a shooting schedule:

Budget

Our budget is mainly based on the artistic supplies, props and background that will be used for the set mise-en-scene when shooting our music video. we decided to divide items among the team mostly in similar based categories to avoid traveling to several locations to pick up different types of items. The Budget includes the following Items: A medium canvas: Rs 600-700 Acrylic paints (x3): Rs 160 (each) Cloth Backdrops (x4): Rs 700 (each) Tape: Rs 50 Lights: Rs 1000 Reflectors: Rs 200 Red String/Yarn (x1): Rs 600 Painter Brush: Rs 200 The notes

Softwares

For our video we will be using different softwares: For the editing of our video we will be using Adobe Premiere Pro. It is one of the best editing soft wares. This was a natural choice since Mahnoor, our editor is already well acquainted with the software and due to its easy availability (she already has it on her laptop). For the Digipack design and animated drawings we will be using Photoshop. This is the software we used for our Magazine task and are therefore familiar and comfortable with it. All of us having ample skills on the software will also allow us to divide certain tasks and get them done more efficiently. We decided to make the website using Wix.com which is an online free website builder tool, particularly for the range of options it offers us such as playable tracks that would be handy when building a website for an artist. Equipment

One of the most imperative steps is choosing the right equipment to produce a high quality music video. As our prop manager, Mahum compiled the list of props we would require and was tasked with collecting them, keeping them safe and bringing them to the shoot. She deemed this to be the equipment we would need for the shoot: We will be using a Sony HX300 camera for our shoot. An SD card, charger and back up batteries will be required. We'll be using the data cable to transfer the clips from the camera to the laptop. A tripod will also be used to ensure we capture stable shots. The camera and its accessories belong to Mahnoor, while we will be borrowing the tripod from a friend.                                              For a few shots we will be using backdrops to add layers of symbolic meaning to our music video. We will also be using reflectors and lights to achieve the lighting we want for our music video. These will be acquired by Mahum

Industry

Record Label: The artist, Red Tide Rats is signed to EMM Records , an independent label housing countless indie artists. Their mission is to provide opportunity to artists who want to produce non-commercial music, perpetuating indie music and culture. Various artists such as ReJuvenile, Lenna and Sacramento Scarecrows are signed under them. Production House: SAD Productions, quickly emerging in popularity ,  will be overlooking the production of the digipack for 'Sarah Tonin' and the music video to promote the track 'I Got Your Message'. The production house will be playing a central role in the aforementioned tasks, involved in not just the grunt work such as filming but also creative processes such as conceptualising the music video and digipack and implementing their creative direction. Post-production will also be handled by them. Distribution: The music video will be distributed through YouTube taking our survey results into consideration and

Location Recce

Perhaps one of the most crucial steps of shooting a music video, is scouting and deciding on the locations we want to utilise. This is why my team members and I had been discussing the ideal locations, something fit for our purposes but also convenient where we wouldn't have to worry about any potential time extensions. Mahum, our resourceful producer has created the location recce. LOCATION RECCE Prepared by Mahum Imran Location Details We will be shooting in 2 locations. Both are indoor places. The first one is going to be at our friend’s place in Garden town. The second shoot is going to be at my place incase something happens backup is going to be Eman’s place. We both live in EME. Scene/Purpose of filming We will be shooting the first part in our friend’s place and the rest at my place or Eman’s Site Contact Name Shoot part 1:  Zainab’s place. Shoot

Mise-en-Scene

Mahnoor, as the art director of the team was responsible for the mis-e-scene of of our music video. As someone who had penned the treatment and shot list I guided her with certain aspects of the mise-en-scene such as the lighting. She put together a slide containing all the necessary details for our locations and their mise-en-scenes. These include, background, costumes and the props used. She also gave a few details in regards to how the elements will be utilized when shooting the Music video.

Performer/Actor

Our artist will be the performer in the the music video, the only person to be featured, since this is her debut album and to successfully promote her we need to give the audience maximum exposure to the artist. To play this role, we've recruited my friend, Ghulam Fatima. We unanimously decided that she had the right look and vibe for what we want in our music video. She was happy to be a part of our project.  Fatima is co-operative, someone who we already share a great working chemistry with, making her and the team mesh together well. This will make the shoot go smoothly. Fatima is also talented at creating unique looks. Combined with Mahum's skills, they'll be able to create all the distinctive looks we want without any extra cost.

Team Roles

Due to some breakdown of teams in our media class, a fourth member, Alishba Arif has joined our group. To have a well managed and organised shoot, we decided to establish our team roles: This was made by Mahum Imran Since I've played a major part in the visualisation of the music video, writing the synopsis, treatment and creating the shot list, it was a natural decision for me to be the screenwriter, director and the lighting director. Mahnoor, due to her prior experience with editing, is our editor. She's also our art director due to her unique creative style, already having introduced interesting elements within the indie codes and conventions. She was previously our camera man in the continuity editing task. We decided to continue this tradition. Mahum has risen to the role of producer, prop manager and make up artist, taking care of all physical and environmental aspects of the shoot. This is also exceptionally practical since a majority of the shoot wi

Shot List

After writing the synopsis and treatment, I crafted the shot list so once we shoot our music video we have a clear idea in our heads about how many shots and what kind need to be shot. This will help us from having to schedule any re-shoots if we later find out we don't have enough footage. Making the shot list also helped us establish the pace of editing we want in our music video and consequently any additional scenes, shots and difference in order of the aforementioned elements that. Key: Click on the image to access the shot list We practiced a hand held dummy shoot where Mahnoor was behind the camera, I gave me direction to how to shoot the shots and Mahum was our actor for the video. By this practice we were able to put our shot list into a real life practical use and we were able to see if we could perform continuity editing. We also managed to refine our shortlist through this process.

Story Board

The story board was designed by Mahnoor on her drawing tablet. Her exceptional art skills played a huge role in the visualisation of the music video. She coloured parts to draw emphasis on the colours, an imperative element of the concept of our music video. Protagonist reaches for a ringing telephone. She puts the receiver next to her ear waiting for a reply from the caller. Cut to another scene, where the protagonist is sitting and contemplating with a telephone besides her, this is a jump in the sequence. pixelated heart shows up next to head as she sits next to a easel with a painting on it depicting a childish drawing. The hand on the right is desperately grasping all the red string completely intertwining themselves up to their wrists. The arm on the left lets go and the red string breaks. The protagonist listens to the caller with a impassive expression.

Treatment

I took up treatment since our final synopsis was based off  quite a chunk of the synopsis I wrote. That's why, while we all have a good understanding of the aesthetics and vibe we want, we thought this task was best suited to me. Click on the image to view the presentation

Mood Board

Once the synopsis was finalised, my team and I came together to divide some essential parts of the planning process to get things done more efficiently. I took up treatment while Mahnoor was tasked with making the story board. Mahum took on the creation of the mood board. The pictures chosen for the mood board:    These were gathered by the whole team in equal parts, keeping all members on board so the vision for the music video would be a shared one and everyone would progress with this feel in mind. Final Synopsis

After going over each other's synopses we decided to use mine with some elements incorporated from Mahnoor's which was easy to do since we had some overlapping ideas in our respective synopsis. One big change was using the protagonist as the sole character as per indie aesthetics but also to ease the actor reqruitment process. We decided on using mine as it was the most detailed, with enough scenes with diegetic audio to meet our final project's time duration. With the addition of increased symbolism we were able to transform our music video from performance based to concept and performance based. We unanimously decided not to use Mahum's synopsis since the more we listened to the song, the more it rung like a love song, for better or for worse. Once we were done finalising our synopsis, we edited and refined it to best get our concept through, Mahnoor's idea of using the red string of fate, nicely tying the concept together. Synopses

My team had quite a few ideas and we all liked an array of concepts. That's why we decided to write a synopsis each, visualising how our concepts would unfurl to the backdrop of the song itself. I picked 'Moving On' while Mahnoor settled on 'Obsession' and Mahum, 'Change'.
